Manhattan Names New Head Coach

A few hours after I posted concerning Manhattan's coaching vacancy, the Jaspers announced that Tom Pardalis was named head coach. Pardalis was recently an assistant at Marist, helping the Red Foxes win the MAAC Championship in 2006.

Manhattan Athletic Director Bob Byrnes stated,

"Manhattan College is extremely lucky to have Tom on board," Byrnes said. "His credentials, teaching expertise and positive attitude will do nothing but help us be better this year and for years to come. He takes over a talented team that hopefully can take the next step to the NCAA Tournament."

Katie Jansson Commits To Iona

West Jersey Witches and South Brunswick High School catcher Katie Jansson has verbally committed to play softball for the Iona Gaels beginning in 2011.

Katie is a Newark County (NJ) first teamer, won a New Jersey state championship with the Witches, and has also played in the NSA Nationals.

Manhattan Still Looking For New Head Coach

The sudden departure of MAAC Coach Of The Year Meaghan Asselta has left a hole in the Jaspers' coaching staff as the team enters the 2009 fall season.

Her departure is a bit of a mystery, as the Manhattan site makes no mention of her leaving, and has scrubbed her from the coaching ranks, even from last year. One must assume her/their decision was financially based because she did a great job leading Manhattan to the MAAC Tournament for the first time since 2005, and also to a first place regular season finish (tied with Fairfield) for the first time in school history.

There is silence out of Manhattan concerning this situation.

MAAC Players---Sarah Minice, Fairfield

2009 MAAC Pitcher Of The Year Sarah Minice led Fairfield to a first place regular season finish last season. She carried the light hitting Stags on her shoulders, pitching 26 innings in 2 games in the MAAC Championship. Fairfield lost both those games, but not because of Sarah. In the 16 inning game against Manhattan (the longest game in MAAC history), she seemed to get stronger as the game dragged on. That after pitching 10 innings against Niagara the previous day.

Sarah, entering her junior year, has been a MAAC 1st teamer twice, and in 2009 was named to the NFCA All-Northeast Region Team. A native of Bellevue, WA, she was 2 time King County AAA MVP in High School. She played travel ball with the Washington Sidewinders; this summer she was on the Sidewinders 23U team that played in the prestigious Canada Cup.

Sarah will baffle MAAC hitters for the next 2 seasons.
