Newest Niagara Recruits

Finally some news from Monteagle Ridge! Not one, but two players from the Toledo Buckeye Heat will be on the Niagara roster beginning in the 2011 season. On the left is Brittany Richberg, a shortstop out of Holland, OH. On the right is Kim Bryson, a pitcher out of Perrysburg, OH.

Brittany also plays at Springfield High School, where she has been a .400 hitter; and Kim pitches for Perrysburg High where she has shown to be a strikeout queen.

Brittany and Kim are highly touted both having been invited to the prestigious Queen Of Diamonds Showcase. What is interesting is that they play in the same High School Division that current Purple Eagle Kristin Sito played in.

Congratulations girls!

Kimi Kurata Signs With Fairfield

Torrance (CA) native Kimi Kurata has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball with Fairfield beginning with the 2011 season.

The outfielder is a senior at Bishop Montgomery High School (where she hit for a .388 average last season) and also plays for the Mizuno Pride.

I must include the following quote from Kimi:

Bishop Montgomery held a signing ceremony for two of its top girl athletes who made their college choices.

Softball player Kimi Kurata signed with Fairfield. Volleyball player Rachel Clark signed with the University of Virginia.

They said signing the various papers to make their college decisions official was a bit nerve-wracking.

"It was scary," Kurata said. "Rachel and I were both talking, and we were nervous. It was like we were signing our life away.

"But we're both confident that we're making the right decisions."

Don't worry Kimi, Connecticut is beautiful in the spring!

Lauren Liseth Signs With Fairfield

She’s the reigning Evergreen 2A Conference Offensive MVP, a Seattle Sidewinder in the summer and, as of next fall, Centralia’s Lauren Liseth will be a Stag.

On Monday, Liseth signed her letter of intent to play softball at Fairfield University, a Division I private school in Connecticut — appropriately nicknamed after the mammal.

Fairfield was on Liseth’s short list of college programs, and the Hub City shortstop and slugger was originally noticed by Stag coach Julie Brzezinski through summer ball with the Sidewinders.

“She liked what she saw, I guess,” Liseth said. “She e-mailed me and we started talking and she expressed interest in me. I took an official visit back there, and they made me a good offer.”

Tigers’ coach Ken Olson knows what Brzezinski saw: composure.

“They’re looking for that composure,” he said. “She does that so well that you can’t read any negativity.

“She’s a rock-solid centerpoint of our team,” Olson added. “It’s a great feat for an athlete to be able to control themselves and keep themselves under control all the time. She does that very well.”

Olson said Fairfield’s 5,100 enrollment, and the chance to play right away, played into Liseth’s decision.

“She chose the college because she liked the smaller setting,” Olson said, “and she really liked the idea that she could play her first season.”

I believe this is the third Washington Sidewinder Fairfield will have on their team including Sarah Minice.

Michelle Tinajero Signs With St. Peter's

During Michelle Tinajero's pursuit of a college, she developed a fondness for the East Coast. Attending a school near New York was near the top of her list for consideration.

So, the Elmwood Park senior will be playing softball not far from the bright lights of Broadway when she attends St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J. next fall. At a news conference attended by her family, her high school coach Erica Hanrahan and several of her teammates, Tinajero signed a national letter of intent to attend the NCAA Division I school and play softball for the Peahens. The senior catcher/shortstop will play for second-year coach Donna Barone.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini Signs With Siena

ADNA, WA — Jessika-Jo Sandrini has been to the Big Apple once, and at the end of the 2009-10 school year the Adna senior will be packing her bags for New York to pitch on a full-ride scholarship.

She’s retiring her Pirate banner to become a Saint, as the ace behind her team’s 2009 State 2B Softball Championship signed a letter of intent to attend Sienna College in Loudonville, N.Y., Wednesday night.

“I’m really excited,” said Sandrini, the 2009 State 2B Tournament MVP and the AP’s State 2B Player of the Year. “I’ve worked hard for an opportunity like this. It’s far away, but I should be fine.”

Sandrini is set to join a Siena Saints’ team coached by Deanna Parks, which participates in the NCAA Division I’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The 2010 Siena team doesn’t have a single player from west of New York in the interior United States, and features and active roster with 16 of 19 players from either New York or New Jersey.

She had other opportunities, but what sold Sandrini was her tournament team’s trip to New York, where she was scouted by Parks.

“I’m going there to pitch, which is what I wanted,” Sandrini said. “(New York’s) just an amazing place.”

Pirate coach Mike Raschke said Sandrini has made a huge impact on the Adna community through her playing career.

“Having that state title probably put us on the map,” he said, “But something like this — it’s big. She deserves it; she’s worked hard at everything she does.”

A large crowd was on hand to help her celebrate at the Sandrini gym in Adna Wednesday night, including representatives from several other area softball teams.

“You can see by the turnout here how many people really respect her and what she’s done for this community,” Raschke said of the star pitcher, who struck out 201 batters last season while boasting a .526 batting average. “Other schools were looking at her to be a utility player and stuff, but to actually do what she wants to do — and pitch — is big.

“We have one more year and hopefully her and the rest of the girls can bring another one home for us.”

Back-to-back titles in softball is what Sandrini has in mind come spring, but for now the Adna senior is focused on her fall sport. The Pirates enter the State 2B Volleyball Tournament Friday in Yakima with a matchup against Liberty Bell.

Notes: According to the its Web site, Siena is a private school that enrolls just over 3,000 full-time students, with the motto of “Developing leaders capable of extraordinary achievement.”

This is a big signing for Siena.
More about Jessika-Jo's freshman season:
IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: While Howell came into the tournament with most of the attention, it was Adna freshman Jessika-Jo Sandrini who wound up making perhaps a bigger impression these past two days.

She fanned 12 in the third-place game against Pe Ell, capping a four-game run Saturday that saw her total 54 strikeouts. Sandrini had 69 in her final five games after getting 15 in a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Concrete on Friday, losing a duel with Howell.

When she begins her career with the Saints, Jessika-Jo may get an opportunity to face off against another Washington native, Fairfield's Sarah Minice.
