I did some research on Amanda Rae Ball after reading Fairfield's announcement of her signing. She was 2009 Scottsdale (AZ) Player of the year as a pitcher and shortstop with Chapparal High School. She finished the season 18-2 with a stingy 0.47 ERA, and more impressively walked only 6 of 425 batters faced. She wasn't too shabby as a hitter either, with 3 homers and a .428 average.
The interesting thing about all this is that it may have never happened if Chapparal's star pitcher MacKenzie Popescue (who is now beginning her freshman season at Arizona State) didn't get injured, which allowed Rae to take over the pitching duties. Rae also plays for the Arizona Storm Gold. It looks as is Fairfield may have signed a real diamond in the rough. Rae will join the Stags for the 2011 season.
