Iona A Perfect 10

Iona 10
Fairfield 0 (6)

Iona 5
Fairfield 2

The Iona Gaels are a perfect 10-0 in the MAAC after sweeping the Stags in Fairfield Saturday.

The Gaels continue their dream season with a pair of impressive road victories. Game One featured the shutdown pitching of Sarah Jackson and a 4 for 4 performance by Allyssa James. Sarah breezed through this one, scattering four singles while striking out nine. She did get into a bases loaded jam in the 2nd inning, but Kristina Lingo was forced out at the plate and Jessica Stand struck out to end the threat. Sarah is now 13-4 on the season.

Allyssa James continued her hot hitting, which included her third homer of the season; she had two RBIs. The Gaels broke the game open in the 2nd inning, scoring five times on five hits, including a Tessa Earley triple that produced two runs. They ended the game in the 6th inning with four runs on five hits. All told, Iona pounded out 15 hits, and sent Fairfield starter Sarah Minice to the bench after three innings and shocked the Stags 10-0.

Iona jumped in front early in game two scoring three times in the 3rd inning, another five hit inning. Eileen McCann singled home a pair of runs; Erin Kyle drove home another.

Fairfield had some fight in them though as they scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Doubles by Dani Griswold and Kristina Lingo produced a run; a wild pitch brought home another. But that was as close as the Stags would get. The Gaels would add two more runs in the sixth when freshman sensation Jodi Petersen doubled home a run and Allyssa James drove home her third of the day. Jodi was 4 for 4 in this game. Deanne Algeo and Allyssa Maiese split circle duty for the Gaels with Allyssa picking up the win.

Iona is now 10-0 in the MAAC; 22-17 overall. Their big test of the season will come next weekend when they travel west to play Niagara and Canisius.
Fairfield dropped to 5-3 in the MAAC; 20-17 overall. They will host a non conference doubleheader against Hartford Sunday.
