Iona Powers Past Manhattan

Iona 8
Manhattan 1

Iona 7
Manhattan 4 (8)

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Eileen McCann (pictured) and Jodi Peterson each hit 3 homers as their Gaels swept a MAAC doubleheader against Manhattan at Gaelic Park on the Manhattan campus.

Last season, the Iona Gaels weren't producing enough runs for their ace pitcher Sarah Jackson. Well, that's all changed this season. The Gaels hit a total of 8 home runs in their Saturday sweep of Manhattan. Sarah started game one of the doubleheader, and was in complete control from start to finish, not giving up a run until the 7th inning and striking out 10. Her record improved to 8-4. The Iona power surge began on their first at bat, as Tessa Early got the Gaels up early with a solo homer to right field. In the Iona 4th, Jodi Peterson hit her first of 3 homers, another solo shot that gave the Gaels a 2-0 lead. Then the dam burst in the 6th inning---once again Jodi Peterson led off with a homer. Not to be outdone, Eileen McCann came up and hit one out herself. All told, the Gaels had 4 runs on 4 hits in the inning. Eileen McCann then led off the 7th inning with a, you guessed it, home run. The Gaels added another run and had an 8-1 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader was a much more competitive affair. Manhattan jumped out of the gate early with Jaci Rahey hitting a 3 run homer. The Lady Jaspers held that lead until the top of the 5th inning when Jodi Peterson hit her third homer of the afternoon with two runners on to tie the game at 3-3. Manhattan answered quickly in the bottom of the same inning when Kelly Murray singled home Melissa Donnelly to give the Lady Jaspers a 4-3 lead. But the Gaels would tie it back up with yet another lead off homer, this time from the bat of Allyssa James. This game needed an extra inning to decide a winner. And in the 8th, yet another lead off homer was hit by Iona, Eileen McCann hit her third of the afternoon, her MAAC leading 11th home run. The Gaels would add a couple more and win the game 7-4. Alyssa Maiese earned the win for the Gaels, with Sarah Jackson coming in for the 8th inning and recording a save.

Iona is now 2-0 in MAAC play, 13-14 overall. Manhattan begins MAAC play at 0-2, they are 9-13 overall.
