The Iona Gaels, perhaps the surprise team of the 2010 MAAC season, completed a weekend sweep by winning a pair of games over Marist. The Gaels are now a perfect 8-0 through the first half of the MAAC season, and are the only undefeated team left in the conference.
The first game against the Red Foxes was a perfect example of why the Gaels have been successful this season. Unlike last year, they are now producing run support for ace pitcher Sarah Jackson. Sarah improved her record to 12-4, but she did it in a breeze because her teammates produced 10 runs on 13 hits to win going away. Marist had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning off RBI singles by Christina Lausch and Danielle Koltz. But the Gaels stormed back in defense of their pitcher putting up 6 in the bottom of the same inning. Marisa Newman had 2 RBIs; Eileen McCann was 3 for 4; Allyssa James 3 for 4; Erin Kyle 2 for 3; Melanie Gettins 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Names sound familiar? It's because I've been writing them often.
In game two, Deanne Algeo pitched her second outstanding game in as many days, this time a 3 hit shutout. The emergence of Deanne as a reliable second pitcher makes the Gaels even more formidable than they already are. Jodi Petersen (pictured) hit a homer in the third inning to give the Gaels all they would need in this one. She's another Iona player mentioned a lot here. Allyssa James was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs; Erin Kyle a perfect 3 for 3. The Gaels are for real---look for them to be at Canisius College for the MAAC Tournament next month.
Iona is now 8-0 in the MAAC; 20-15 overall. Marist dropped to 0-6; 4-25.
