Iona Sweeps Rider, Takes MAAC Lead

Iona 1
Rider 0

Iona 11
Rider 1 (5)

The Iona Gaels took a pair of games from the Rider Broncs in New Rochelle, NY Sunday and in the process took first place in the MAAC.

Game one of the MAAC doubleheader was a showdown between two of the conference's top pitchers. Iona's Sarah Jackson and Rider's Rachael Matreale both pitched well enough for their teams to win, but Sarah was slightly better, pitching a complete game shutout while striking out 13 and allowing only 2 hits. The Gaels were able to scratch out a run in the second inning when Chelsea Sheehan singled home Melanie Gettins, who had reached second base with a double. That was all Iona would get on Rachael Matreale who allowed only 5 hits throughout.

The second game was close, 1-1 until...the Gaels lit the fireworks for 10 runs in the 4th inning, stunning the Broncs into an early bus ride back to New Jersey. The Gaels batted around the order, and some, producing 9 hits. For the game, Allyssa James was 3 for 3, Melanie Gettins 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, Jodi Peterson 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, Tessa Early and Marisa Newman each had a pair of hits. Alyssa Maiese picked up the win for the Gaels.

Iona improved their MAAC record to 4-0; 15-14 overall. Rider is now 4-2 in the MAAC; 10-20-1 overall.
