Watch out, here come the Rider Broncs! Rider's sweep of Marist, highlighted by Rachael Matreale's no hitter, gives the Broncs sole possession of first place in the MAAC.
The Broncs charged out of the gate quickly in game one of their MAAC doubleheader with Marist at Herb and Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, NJ. An Amanda Centeno sac fly RBI followed by a Heather Muscara 2 RBI single gave Rider a quick 3-0 lead. The Broncs made it 6-0 off of an Amanda Centeno 3 run homer in the 3rd inning. A Sam Pugh RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Samantha Mayer ended the game in the bottom of the 5th. Rachael Matreale (pictured) allowed no hits raising her record to 5-10.
So why not start Rachael the second game? That's exactly what Rider Head Coach Tricia Carroll did. But coach pulled her after 2 innings when the Broncs had already built a 6-0 lead (no doubt saving her for Sunday's doubleheader vs. Iona). Brittany Eckett hit her 8th home run of the season giving the Broncs another 3-0 1st inning lead. Rider added 3 more in the 2nd inning when Allyson Melia scored on a wild pitch and Amanda Centeno knocked in 2 more with a single. Brittany Eckett knocked in another run in the 3rd inning to give Rider a 7-0 lead. Marist did respond with 4 runs of their own in the 5th inning, thanks in part to an Ashley Corriss 2 RBI double. But Rider would score again in the 6th on a wild pitch and take the game 8-4. Kelsey Krisch improved her record to 4-3 with the win.
Rider is now 4-0 in the MAAC; 10-18-1 overall. Marist begins MAAC play at 0-2; and is 4-20 overall.
