Canisius Sweeps Fairfield
A 7th inning comeback in game one and a 5 RBI performance by Katie Lancellotti (pictured) gave the Golden Griffins a sweep over Fairfield Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex on the Canisius Campus.
Game one of the MAAC doubleheader featured Fairfield's Sarah Minice and the Griffs' Caroline Main shutting down each team until the 6th inning. The Stags Dani Griswold hit a home run that bounced off center fielder Amanda Cannizzo's glove as she crashed through the fence, giving Fairfield a 2-0 lead. Canisius mounted their comeback in the 7th with Lauren Hope leading off by hitting her MAAC leading 5th triple. After Sarah Minice walked Katie Medina, Michelle Fridey singled home Lauren with her 48th RBI of the season, and in the process broke the Canisius record for RBIs in a season. Paige Freiberger doubled home the tying run; 2 batters later Emily Helbig ended the game with an RBI single. Caroline Main won her 13th game of the season; she has not lost since March 21.
Kristie Trifiolis opened game two by giving Fairfield a 1-0 lead with a solo homer, but the Griffs would score 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and add 6 more to end the game in 6 innings. Katie Lancellotti was 3 for 5 with a triple; Katie Medina had 2 RBIs.
Canisius is now 10-2 in the MAAC; 28-15 overall. Fairfield is 5-5; 21-19.
