Purple Eagles Sweep Siena; Move Up to Third Place
MAAC batting leader Teresa Healy (pictured) hit 5 for 8 with a homer and 4 RBIs as Niagara swept Siena in a MAAC doubleheader played at Loudonville, NY Friday.
Game one was an offensive avalanche for both teams. Siena's Lauren Weingart homered in the bottom of the first inning to give the Saints a two run lead. But the Purples Eagles responded immediately when Kayla Hines launched a two run blast to center field and Kristin Kill doubled home a run to give Niagara a 4-2 lead. The Saints tied it right back up in the home half of the same inning thanks to an RBI single by Jessica Mushel and an Amanda Ferro fielder's choice RBI.
Niagara seemed to have things wrapped up when they scored five more runs in the 4th and 6th innings on two RBIs by Teresa Healy and single RBIs by Kristin Sito, Kayla Hines and Jen Hare. But the Saints still had some fight in them, scoring three times in the bottom of the 6th inning, aided by another Jessica Mushel RBI, and one by Kayla Kaminsky. 9-7 was as close as they would get as Teresa Healy added another RBI in the top of the 7th to make the final score 10-7.
Game two saw each team collect 10 hits, but Niagara made the most of theirs. Teresa Healy got the scoring underway with a solo homer in the first inning. The Purple Eagles added two unearned runs in the third inning; they were helped along with two Siena errors and a Kristin Kill RBI single to add a couple more in the 6th, and won going away 6-1.
The sweep gives Niagara current possession of third place in the MAAC with a 9-5 record. A single win at Marist Sunday clinches a spot in the MAAC Championship for the Purple Eagles. They are now 20-19 overall. Siena is officially eliminated from Championship contention with the losses, and is now 5-9 in the MAAC; 12-37 overall.
