The Iona Gaels secured a berth in the championship game of the 49er Round Robin by beating host Charlotte today 11-3.

Senior Alyssa Maiese (pictured) led the Gaels to a 6 run 5th inning when she knocked a homer over the left field fence. This inning completed a comeback after the 49ers took an early 2-0 lead.

The Gaels pounded out 15 hits in this one, led by Jodi Petersen, Marissa Newman and Eileen McCann who each had 2 RBIs. Freshman Katie Jansson pitched in with a pair of hits and a RBI; Melanie Gettins posted the same numbers while Deanne Algeo and Beth Kann contributed to the cause with a RBI each. Allyssa James stood tall, hitting 4 for 5 and scoring twice. Sarah Jackson went the distance, striking out 7 49ers and earning her second win of the young season.

The Gaels (2-1) will have a rematch with Virginia Tech (3-0), to whom they lost 5-3 yesterday, in a few minutes for the championship of this tournament.
