Gaels Fall Short Vs. Virginia Tech
The Iona Gaels settled for a split on day one of the 49er Round Robin as they fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies 5-3 today in Charlotte, NC.
Iona got off to a great start in this one, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Allyssa James (pictured) drove home Tessa Earley (who walked) and Alyssa Maiese (who singled) by smashing a double to center field. Virginia Tech however scored single runs in the next three innings off starting pitcher Maiese to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Hokies added single runs in the 6th and 7th innings, and held on for the win after the Gaels loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th. Freshman Katie Jansson walked to force home the third Iona run, but Deanne Algeo then grounded out to end the game.
The Gaels had 5 hits in the game, with Eileen McCann picking up a pair of singles and Jodi Petersen accounting for the other hit. Alyssa Maiese allowed 12 hits and struck out 3, and she certainly pitched well enough to give her team a chance to win.
Sunday Iona will play host Charlotte, and then the round robin will have a championship/consolation game.
