Saints Drop Opener

Delaware St. 9
Siena 1

Box Score

The Siena Saints opened their 2011 softball season in Cary, NC with a 9-1 loss to Delaware State Saturday at the Lady Eagle Classic.

The Saints found themselves down early in this one. Delaware State took a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, and added four more runs in the 3rd off of starter Jessika-Jo Sandrini. Jessika-Jo had control problems in her first college start, throwing four wild pitches. She struck out two and allowed 9 hits before being relieved by fellow freshman Darcy Gardner. Darcy would surrender 3 more runs to Delaware St. in the final two innings. So Coach Bill Lajeunesse wanted to get his freshman pitchers in the rotation immediately; I'm sure nerves played a factor today.

Siena did have 7 hits in the game; with Courtney Brinkman (pictured) hitting a pair of singles. She scored Siena's only run on a bases loaded walk to Mandy Ferro in the 5th inning. Jessika-Jo Sandrini, Shannon Jones, Krystyn Vaughn, Sarah Gallacchi and Lyndsey McKeever also had hits for the Saints.

Siena is back on the field today against South Carolina State.
