Broncs Split Home Opener
The Rider Broncs played their first games at home and Brittany Eckett's (pictured) 2 RBI performance helped them gain a split with Army Sunday afternoon in Lawrenceville, NJ.
Once again I have to point out that Rider pitcher Rachael Matreale lost a game and improved her ERA! And even though she has a 3-8 record, Rachael is currently ranked #3 among MAAC pitchers. She's having a very good year, but rarely gets the offensive support she needs. This is the number one priority for Coach Tricia Carroll---figure out a way to get Rachael some support. Rachael scattered 4 hits against Army and struck out 7, while allowing only one earned run. Good enough to win, but the Broncs simply could not provide any runs.
Rider got excellent pitching in the second game also. This time freshman Krysti Maronski took to the circle and held the Army to 3 hits. She struck out 6. Army did take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but Rider responded this time. In the bottom of the frame, Kehli Washington walked, stole 2nd base, and reached 3rd on a wild pitch before Brittany Eckett sent her home with a double. Brittany drove home another with a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning after Jen Steward and Kehli Washington singled. Jen scored and Kehli made it home on a throwing error. Pinch hitter Ally Coryell then singled home Amanda Centeno to give the Broncs a 4-1 lead. Krysti Maronski no hit Army for the final 4 innings and the Broncs had the win. Freshman Lisa Blanton was 2 for 3 in this game, with a double.
The Broncs are getting good pitching this season, but they now have to warm up the bats. BTW, Heather Muscara did not play today, and has missed 8 games this season. I'm guessing that she has some sort of nagging injury. Rider will be at St. Joseph's Wednesday.
