Fairfield Takes Two
Freshman Kristen Filicia (pictured) had 4 hits and 3 RBIs on the day in helping the Fairfield Stags sweep Yale Wednesday afternoon in New Haven, CT.
After being shutout by Providence Tuesday, the Stags got right back on the field the next day and exploded for 19 runs on 24 hits. They got in front early in game one, scoring 5 times in the 2nd inning. A Kristina Lingo double, Rebecca Trott walk and Nikki Osofsky bunt single loaded the bases for Kimi Kurata who promptly sent them all home with a double to center field. Immediatley following, Kristen Filicia tripled sending Kimi home; Kristen scored on the errant throw. Kristina Lingo doubled again in the 3rd inning, and made it home courtesy of an Ali Wigand single and the Stags were up 6-0. Yale fought back though in the bottom of the same inning, scoring 4 runs, the big shot coming with a 3 run homer. The Bulldogs added another run in the 5th, and suddenly Fairfield's lead was cut to 6-5. But in the 7th inning, after a Tiffany Lawson walk and Lauren Liseth single, Kristina Lingo got her 3rd hit of the game, a single, that scored Tiffany. Kristina would score herself on a Rae Ball pinch hit single to give the Stags an 8-5 win. Rebecca Trott started for Fairfield, Kelli Panter got the win in relief, and Sarah Minice closed the deal to earn a save.
Game 2 was actually a bit closer than the final score indicates. The Stags scored 5 runs in the 7th inning to blow the game open. Lauren Liseth continued her stellar freshman season by hitting her 4th home run of the year; she finished 3 for 4 in this game. Rae Ball was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs; Kimi Kurata, 2 for 3 with a RBI; Kristen Flicia, 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs; Rachel Beaudoin, a run and RBI. Those are all freshmen I just listed. In the 2011 season preview, I talked about the role the Fairfield freshmen would have to play---they are playing a huge role thus far this season. Rae Ball started this game, and Emily Orr pitched 4 innings of relief to pick up her first win of the season.
Next up for the Stags: MAAC season begins with a visit to Iona on Saturday!
