Golden Griffins Split At Dawg Pound Invitational
Senior Paige Freiberger (pictured) had a 3 for 4 day with 3 RBIs as Canisius shook off the rust and gained a split at the Retriever Classic in Baltimore, MD Saturday.
Because of weather and travel problems, Canisius had to sit through a 20 day layoff after their opening weekend before finally getting some games in today. Their offense didn't seem much affected though as they bolted out of the gate with 4 runs in the 1st inning of their game with Seton Hall. The Griffs immediately loaded the bases when Lauren Hope reached on an error, Katie Medina walked and Lizzy Gatto singled. The next batter, Paige Freiberger, drove home 2 runs with a single to left field. Paige and Lizzy both scored on an ensuing error by the shortstop, and Canisius was up 4-0. The lead was short lived however as Seton Hall struck for 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. And that's how it went for the rest of the game...Canisius getting the lead, and Seton Hall tying it right back up. In the 5th inning, with Canisius up 6-5 and Jen Consaul in relief for starter Caroline Main, Seton Hall took the game. With 2 runners on and 2 outs, Jen Consaul misplayed a ground ball for an error, and the inning was extended. SHU hit 2 consecutive hits that produced 4 runs. Lauren Falzone was 2 for 3 in this game; Paige Freiberger had 3 RBIs; Lauren Hope 2 for 4. Lauren stole 2 bases, and moved with 16 of the MAAC career record.
Amanda Baun started the game against Brown, and was in control from the start, striking out 6. Katie Lancellotti was 2 for 3 for Canisius, driving home 3 runs. Kerry Ulmer drove home the other run in pinch hit duty.
The Griffs continue Sunday in Baltimore with games against Morgan St. and UMBC.
