Katie Bowen Wins Debut; LJs Split
Freshman Katie Bowen (pictured) won her first college game and helped her cause with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate as Manhattan split on their first day at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL Friday.
The senior laden Lady Jaspers have only one freshman on the roster this season, but she's a good one. Katie Bowen scattered 5 hits and allowed just run in her first start for Manhattan. The LJs exploded for 8 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings in their game against Detroit Mercy. They opened the 2nd inning with 3 consecutive singles, and scored their first run on a Meghan McDevitt walk. With the bases still loaded, Kristina Walraven drove home a pair of runs to give Manhattan a quick 3-0 lead.
In the 3rd inning, the Lady Jaspers would score 5 runs. Kelly Murray singled home a run; Katie Bowen did the same. Meghan McDevitt got her 2nd RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, then Melissa Cascio blasted a two run homer and suddenly the LJs were up 8-0. It would be a walk off when in the bottom of the 5th inning, Katie Bowen singled home Jen Keller, who had singled and was advanced by a Nicole Michel single, for Manhattan had a 9-1 victory. Melissa Donnelly was 2 for 3 in this game; Kristina Walraven, Katie Bowen, Meghan McDevitt and Melissa Cascio each had two RBIs.
Things didn't go as well for the Lady Jaspers in their game against Lehigh. In fact, it was a reverse image of the previous game. Lehigh pounded out 14 hits to Manhattan's 2. Kristina Walraven drove home the LJs' only run, her 3rd RBI of the day, that cut the Lehigh lead to 2-1. But Lehigh scored 7 times in the final 3 innings to win going away. Melissa Donnelly took the loss. Manhattan takes on Holy Cross and South Dakota Saturday at the Rebel Games.
