Marist Sweeps Temple; Takes First Place
Nicole DiVirgilio's (pictured) grand slam home run propelled the Red Foxes to a sweep of Temple and sole possession of first place in the MAAC Tuesday in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Game one of this doubleheader featured another fine pitching performance by freshman Paige Lewis who seems to be developing quickly. She scattered 4 hits and allowed only one Owl to reach 3rd base in recording the shutout victory. And Marist needed her shutout pitching, as they were able to produce only a single run in this one. And that run came in the 1st inning, when Danielle Koltz continued her RBI hot streak by singling home Megan Lamoureux who had been on 2nd base after singling herself and moving over on an Aly Klemmer walk. That was all the offense Paige would need; she struck out 6 batters in the game.
The second game saw Marist starter Emily Osterhaus get off to a shaky start when she walked 2 batters and surrendered 2 homers that gave Temple a quick 4-0 lead. She settled down after that, allowing only one hit the rest of the way. The Temple starting pitcher got shaky herself in the bottom of the 2nd inning when she began by hitting Danielle Koltz, then issuing 4 consecutive walks. After a Megan Lamoureux ground ball out and a wild pitch, the Red Foxes had tied the game without recording a single hit. Nicole DiVirgilio then doubled home Christina Lausch to give Marist a 5-4 lead. In the 3rd inning, after a bunch of walks and a hit batter, Nicole DiVirgilio launched her grand slammer to give Marist an insurmountable lead. Lyndsay Durant hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 4th inning to give the Red Foxes a run rule cushion. She finished with 3 RBIs; Nicole DiVirgilio with 5.
The sweep gave Marist a 15-14 record, and first place in the MAAC. The Red Foxes begin MAAC play Saturday when they host the Siena Saints.
