Red Foxes Pick Up First Win Of Season
Freshman Haley Birnbaum (pictured) hit a 3 run home run to help Marist gain their first win of the 2011 season as the Red Foxes split on the first day of the Lady Pirates Classic at Hampton, VA Friday.
That homer was not Haley's first in her college career; that came in the first game of the day against Rutgers. Marist lost that game, 9-4, but were already showing signs of getting their offense on track. Lindsay Durant also hit a homer for the Red Foxes in that game, but Rutgers scored too often and too early, putting up 9 runs in the first 3 innings.
The Red Foxes' second game of the day against Brown was when their bats became fully warm. BTW, this was not a run rule game, although it almost was. Darkness caused the early end of this one. Marist got on the board early when freshman Alyssa Zahka doubled home Ashley Corriss, and Nicole DiVirgilio singled home Alyssa for a 2-0 lead. In the 3rd inning, Haley Birnbaum launched her 3 run homer over the left field fence scoring Alyssa Zahka (who had reached with her second hit) and Megan Lamoureux. Marist made it 9-0 in the top of the 5th inning when Alyxandra (A.J.) Ponce drove home a run on a fielder's choice and Caitlin Schell lined a 3 run homer over the left field fence. Four home runs on the day for the Red Foxes. Emily Osterhaus won her first game of the season, striking out 5 and surrendering no earned runs.
Marist is tight back at it Saturday at the Lady Pirates Classic when they will play Maryland Eastern Shore.
