Red Foxes Split In Texas
The Marist Red Foxes received more great pitching from Emily Osterhaus (pictured) and gained a split against UTEP in El Paso, TX Friday.
I'm writing more about Marist than I thought I might be because they're playing such good softball. This is a team that could show themselves to be a factor in the MAAC race after finishing 4-12 last season. This preseason seems to be hastening their development.
The first game was actually closer than the score indicates. After falling behind 6-0, the Red Foxes rallied with a solid 5th inning, in which they scored 4 runs on 5 hits. This shows they have learned to believe in themselves. The big shot came from the bat of the red hot Megan Lamoureux (I don't know exactly how hot she is, because Marist is waiting for box scores from Morgan State that are never going to come)...anyway, Megan clubbed a grand slam homer over the left field fence to put Marist right back in the game. UTEP would score 6 times in the next 2 innings to end the game though. But that was certainly a big time hit.
It was a different story in the second game. Emily Osterhaus continued her fine pitching, this time scattering 6 hits and shutting out the home team for the final 6 innings. Freshman Alyssa Zahka continued to contribute by hitting a 4th inning solo shot that gave the Red Foxes the lead for good. Haley Birnbaum and Aly Klemmer added RBIs. The way things are playing out, the Red Foxes may be the team best prepared for MAAC play come April.
Marist plays another doubleheader at UTEP Saturday.
