St. Peter's Comes Oh So Close
I had hoped to write tonight about St. Peter's first win of the 2011 season, but alas, it was not to be as Shelby Beaver (pictured) played a great game but lost a heartbreaker to Columbia in New York City Saturday afternoon.
After a run rule game one loss, the Peahens hung tough and played much better in game two. St. Peter's jumped in front in the 2nd inning when Monique Flores doubled and made it home when Michelle Tinajero hit a ground ball that the Columbia shortstop could not handle. Shelby Beaver started in the circle for the Peahens, and after shutting out Columbia for the first 5 innings, she stepped up to the plate herself and clubbed a homer over the left field fence to help her own cause and give St. Peter's a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Peahens, a pair of errors and a home run led to a walk off win for Columbia. Shelby Beaver finished with 5 strikeouts.
It's going to take some time for new coach Ranae Bart to rebuild from scratch, but she has some good young players to work with and hopefully St. Peter's will be on the rise again soon!
