Battle Of The Sarahs; Stags And Gaels Split
Sarah Minice (pictured) pitched a one hitter to lead Fairfield to a win in game one of the doubleheader played Saturday in New Rochelle, NY. Melanie Gettins' late inning heroics won game two for Iona.
Game one of the doubleheader between Iona and Fairfield featured a match up of the last two MAAC Pitchers Of The Year, Iona's Sarah Jackson and Fairfield's Sarah Minice. Sarah Jackson got the better of it last season with a big win at Fairfield, but this season it was Sarah Minice who was masterful in shutting down the Iona attack. She took a no hitter into the 6th inning before surrendering a single to Jodi Petersen, but that was it. She struck out 9 batters in the game and was in complete control. After two scoreless innings, the Stags loaded the bases in the 3rd when Kristina Lingo and Rae Ball singled, with a walk to Ali Wigand in between. Shortstop Deanne Algeo threw out Kristina at the plate, but then Laura Carta singled home Ali Wigand to give Fairfield a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning, Kristen Filicia hit her second single of the game, stole 2nd base, reached 3rd base on Tiffany Lawson's ground out before being sent home by Lauren Liseth. The Stags added to their lead in the 6th inning with a Kristina Lingo RBI, and won 3-0.
Alyssa Maiese pitched the second game for Iona, and scattered 4 hits while striking out 7. Fairfield did take the lead in the 1st inning when Kristina Lingo singled home Tiffany Lawson, but the run was unearned. The Gaels tied the game right up in the bottom of the same inning when Deanne Algeo led off with a home run over the left field fence. But then Alyssa Maiese and Fairfield starter Rebecca Trott took this game up to the 6th inning with no more scoring. Rebecca struck out 5 before being relieved by Sarah Minice in the 6th after Eileen McCann led off with a single. Jodi Petersen followed up with a single of her own to put two runners on, but Fairfield then forced out the lead runner twice. With 2 outs, Melanie Gettins hit a double to deep center field to give Iona a 3-1 lead. The game wasn't over yet however. In the top of the 7th inning, Fairfield loaded the bases with no outs. That's when Melanie Gettins made her second huge play. On a ground ball off the bat of Tiffany Lawson, third baseman Chelsea Sheehan threw pinch runner Rachel Beaudoin out at the plate, and the senior catcher gunned down Tiffany Lawson at 1st base for a crushing double play. Lauren Liseth then grounded out and Iona had the win, 3-1.
