Gaels Sweep Canisius For Perfect Weekend
The Gaels had an easy time of it in their sweep of Canisius in New Rochelle, NY Sunday, and finished their MAAC weekend a perfect 4-0.
Iona pitcher Sarah Jackson earned another win against Canisius in game one to finish the weekend with a 3-0 record, lifting her team back into contention in the MAAC. Sarah struck out 7, while walking only one. Canisius did jump out to the early lead in this one when Lizzy Gatto singled home Lauren Falzone in the 3rd inning. But that was the only scoring the Golden Griffins would produce for the rest of the day. The Gaels responded in the bottom of the same inning, taking the lead when Jodi Petersen singled home Deanne Algeo and Tessa Earley. Deanne would go on to hit a solo homer in the 5th inning to increase the Gaels' lead to 3-1; in the 6th, a ground rule double by Eilenn McCann drove home a pair and provided the final margin of victory, 5-1. Caroline Main was credited with the loss for Canisius.
The Gaels scored an unearned run in the 2nd inning of game two, with Katie Jansson making it home on an error after getting on base with a double. Jen Consaul of Canisius and Alyssa Maiese then dueled with shutout ball until the bottom of the 6th inning when Iona broke the game open. After Eileen McCann and Jodi Petersen singles, Alyssa helped her own cause by singling home a run. A Katie Jansson double and Melanie Gettins single scored 2 more, then Katie scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 5-0. Alyssa Maiese earned the win with a 6 strikeout performance, scattering 4 hits.
Iona improved to 5-3 on the season; Canisius drops to 3-5.
