Gaels Sweep Niagara

Melanie Gettins hits the game winner

Iona 4
Niagara 1

Iona 9
Niagara 6 (13)

Iona and Niagara just finished a marathon in New Rochelle, NY with the Gaels gaining the sweep in dramatic fashion.

The Gaels and Purple Eagles will sleep well tonight after their second game went a grueling 13 innings. Senior Melanie Gettins finally ended the game with a 3 run homer with one out in the bottom of the 13th. Alyssa Maiese started this game for Iona, and pitched until there were 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning when she was relieved by Sarah Jackson. But with 2 runners on, Kristin Sito hit a home run that drew the Purple Eagles even at 6-6. Both teams had chances in the extra frames, but could not push the winning run across until Melanie's shot. Bri Allen took the loss for Niagara. Eileen McCann and Katie Jansson also homered in this game for the Gaels. Maggie McDonald hit one out for Niagara.

Sarah Jackson pitched the equivalent of 2 complete games today, having started game one. She was helped greatly by the bat of Allyssa James, who hit a home run and finished the game with 3 RBIs. Jodi Petersen also homered. Kayla Hines drove home Niagara's only run.

Both teams continue MAAC play Sunday. Iona will host to Canisius, while Niagara travels to Rider.

Thanks for clarifying that---the live stats showed Sarah pitching to the first 2 batters, but I guess it was mistaken identity. there didn't seem to be a video feed for game 2, which was a pity.
