Marist Sweeps Rider; Holds First
A huge performance by Ashley Corriss and stellar pitching gave the Marist Red Foxes a sweep of Rider and a hold on first place Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY.
As time goes on, and the wins add up, the Red Foxes gain more confidence. They are off to a 4-0 start to MAAC play, and as their pitching continues to improve are looking good to make a run. Rider got on the board first in game one, thanks to a 4th inning Lucy Higgins double that scored Brittany Eckett. The Broncs couldn't hold the lead for long though. Marist evened things up in the bottom of the same inning when freshman Alyssa Zahka led off with a homer to deep center field. In the 5th inning, the Red Foxes scored again. Ashley Corriss led off with a single; the Red Foxes' big guns, Nicole DiVirgilio and Megan Lamoureux, sacrificed her over two bases so Aly Klemmer could single her home for a 2-1 lead. Insurance was added in the 6th inning when Haley Birnbaum doubled and was sent home by Ashley Corriss. Paige Lewis pitched another good game for Marist, picking up her 8th win of the season. Once again, Rider's Rachael Matreale pitched well enough to win, but did not get much offensive support.
A big 5 run 2nd inning propelled Marist to a run rule win in the second game. With the bases still loaded after Aly Klemmer scored on an illegal pitch, Ashley Corriss sent a triple down the right field line that scored 3 runs. Megan Lamoureux singled to score Ashley, and the Red Foxes had a comfortable lead. A pair of RBIs in the 4th inning gave Ashley Corriss 5 for the game; Megan Lamoureux and Haley Birnbaum added RBIs and Marist won going away. A 3 hit shutout gave Emily Osterhaus her 8th win of the season.
Big test coming up Sunday for Marist---defending MAAC champion Iona comes to town for a doubleheader. This will not decide the Red Foxes' fate, but a sweep would be a huge statement.
