Peahens Win First MAAC Game Since '09
Shelby Beaver's (pictured) 5 strikeout performance lifted St. Peter's to their first MAAC win since the 2009 season and freshman Krysti Maronski threw a 3 hit shutout in Rider's game 2 win in Jersey City, NJ Saturday afternoon.
I wrote yesterday that the Peahens' first goal this MAAC season was to be more competitive in conference games. They certainly were right out of the gate. Shelby Beaver continued her improved pitching with a gutsy performance against Rider in the first game of the doubleheader. Her team gave her a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning. After a Monique Flores single and Kristen Kaneyuki walk, Samantha Bennett drove home the Peahens' first run with a single to left field. After a walk to Michelle Tinajero loaded the bases, Stephanie Gilronan hit an infield single for a 2 run lead. Rider got one back in the 5th inning when Brittany Eckett singled home Jen Steward who had doubled. But Shelby Beaver then shut the door, striking out 2 Broncs in the 7th inning.
Rider freshman Krysti Maronski pitched a 3 hit gem in the second game of the day, striking out 5 and walking no one to earn the shutout win. The Broncs put up 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, and never looked back. Jen Steward opened the game by getting hit by a Shelby Beaver pitch. She then stole 2nd base and was moved to 3rd base by a Kehli Washington bunt. Brittany Eckett got another RBI when Jen was safe on a play at the plate. A double by Sam Pugh sent Brittany to 3rd base; she was then sent home by Samantha Mayer's single. Freshman Lisa Blanton then gave Rider a 3 run lead with a single to left field. Samantha Mayer earned another RBI in the 5th inning, and Ally Coryell singled home 2 runs in the 7th inning for a final score of 6-0.
