Julie DiMatteo pitched a 4 hit shutout, and Teresa Healy hit 4 for 6 as Niagara opened the home portion of their season with a doubleheader sweep of Akron Thursday in Niagara Falls, NY.

Niagara scored the only run they needed in the first game in the 6th inning when Jen Hare doubled home Becky Zill. Jen had a pair of hits in this game. Julie DiMatteo was masterful in shutting down the Zips, scattering 4 hits while striking out 6.

The Purple Eagles scored 7 runs in the first 2 innings of game two. Becky Zill's 2 run homer got Niagara on the board in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, doubles by Sarah Anthon and Kristin Sito gave the Purples a 5-1 lead. The MAAC's leading hitter, Teresa Healy, then bombed one over the left field fence and it was lights out. Teresa is tops in the conference with a .462 average, and number one in homers with 8. Freshman Kim Bryson got the win for Niagara, allowing only one earned run while striking out 7.

The Purple Eagles begin MAAC play this weekend when they host Manhattan and St. Peter's.
