Marist swept defending champion Iona in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, NY.

I told you yesterday that Marist could make a "statement" by sweeping Iona today. They spoke loud and clear, and the rest of the conference better be listening. The Red Foxes, who have already doubled last season's win total, faced their toughest challenge when they went up against Iona's Sarah Jackson in game one of the doubleheader. Sarah pitched a great game too, striking out 10 and allowing only 3 hits. The Gaels got on the board first in the 2nd inning when Alyssa Maiese continued her hot hitting by smashing a lead off homer over the left field fence. That would be it for Iona though, as Marist starter Emily Osterhaus pitched a great game herself, allowing only 4 hits. That one run would hold up until the 6th inning. In that inning, Sarah Jackson issued her only walk of the game, but it was a fatal one. Caitlin Schell received the free pass, then made it to 2nd base when Ashley Corriss fouled out. Megan Lamoureux then delivered a huge 2 out single that scored Caitlin to tie the game, which would go into extra innings. In the Iona 8th, Katie Jansson singled, and found herself on 3rd base after a bunt and Deanne Algeo single. But she was stranded when Emily Osterhaus retired Eileen McCann and Jodi Petersen. Danielle Koltz led off the bottom of the inning for the Red Foxes, and delivered a solo homer over the center field fence that sent the Marist side into celebration.

Game two got off to a strange start. No doubt shocked by the turn of events of game one, the Gaels stormed out of the gate and scored 3 runs in the opening inning, thanks to a 2 run homer by Eileen McCann, and a passed ball that scored Jodi Petersen who had previously doubled. Marist reacted to that by scoring 6 times in the bottom of the 1st inning. After a bases loaded walk to Alyssa Zahka scored a run, Haley Birnbaum launched a grand slam homer over the right field fence. She was followed by Danielle Koltz, who hit her 2nd homer of the day, and Marist was up 6-3. Iona responded quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd inning. After Chelsea Sheehan was hit by a pitch, Deanne Algeo sent one deep over the center field fence and it was a 6-5 game. But Marist rode a wave of confidence and scored 7 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to end the game early. RBIs by Danielle Koltz, Sarah Carmody and Caitlin Schell in the 3rd inning made it 9-5. Alyssa Zahka, Nicole DiVirgilio and Danielle Koltz all drove home runs in the 4th; Alyssa scored the game ender on an error. Freshman Paige Lewis picked up her 9th win of the season.

Iona dropped to 1-3. Marist, at 6-0, is the only unbeaten team in the MAAC. This may be a surprise to some, but I have been warning you for quite some time about this team.
