Siena And Canisius Split
Lopsided wins by each team resulted in a split of a MAAC doubleheader between Siena and Canisius Friday in Loudonville, NY.
These games were moved to Friday because of the threat of inclement weather this weekend. Canisius took the early lead in game one, when in the 2nd inning after a Paige Freiberger walk Emily Helbig hit her 3rd home run of the season over the right field fence. But the Saints weren't down for long, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After Lindsey McKeever was issued a walk, Jessika-Jo Sandrini doubled her home to cut the Canisius lead in half. An error by first baseman Emily Helbig then allowed Jessika-Jo to score the tying run. After Shannon Jones was walked, Mandy Ferro singled home the go ahead run. The Saints would then score 3 times with 2 outs. Courtney Brinkman's double brought home a run, then Kirstyn Vaughn's single brought home two and Siena led 6-2. Four more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning ended this game early. Shannon Jones drove home 2 runs; Mandy Ferro and Alyssa Sceppaguercio both drove home singles to give the Saints a 10-2 win. Jessika-Jo Sandrini (pictured left) picked up her 10th win of the season; Amanda Baun saw her record drop to 8-8.
Game two went in the Golden Griffins' favor right from the 1st inning. They loaded the bases quickly after a walk to Katie Medina and singles by Lizzy Gatto and Paige Freiberger. Right fielder Courtney Brinkman could not handle a fly from the bat of Katie Lancellotti, allowing 2 runs to score unearned. A single by Val Nappo then gave Canisius a 4-0 lead. The Golden Griffins added to that lead in the 5th inning after an Emily Helbig double scored Katie Medina. They scored twice more in the 7th inning when Lauren Hope singled and scored on an error by Kayla Kaminsky, and Lizzy Gatto doubled home pinch runner Lauryn Chris. Freshman Jen Consaul (pictured left) picked up the win for Canisius, allowing only 3 hits and not permitting a Saint to advance past 2nd base. Amanda Fillipazzo took the loss.
Canisius continues MAAC play next Wednesday when they host Niagara; Siena will next be in action next Tuesday when they host cross town rival Albany.
