Deanne Algeo drove home four runs to lead Iona to a sweep of Rider Sunday at Lawrenceville, NJ.

Despite losing a MAAC high 36 games, Rider played very hard this weekend. But their offensive woes continue. Game one of this doubleheader was no exception as the Broncs could produce nothing off Iona starter Sarah Jackson, who struck out 9 and scattered 4 hits. The Gaels opened the scoring in the 3rd inning when after a Jodi Petersen walk, Alyssa Maiese launched her 7th home run of the season over the left field fence. Deanne Algeo made the score 4-0 in the 5th inning when she singled home Tessa Earley and Allyssa James. Allyssa then gave the Gaels a 6-0 lead the next inning when she singled home pinch runners Tierney Markou and Cari Anderson. Krysti Maronski suffered the loss for the Broncs.

Rider took the lead in the opening inning of game two when Sam Pugh singled home Alyssa Paul. That small lead would hold up through the 5th inning, as Rider starter Rachael Matreale held the Gaels hitless through the first four frames. But she made a fatal mistake with two outs in the 5th inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd bases, Rachael hit pinch hitter Marissa Newman, a .133 hitter, to load the bases. The next batter, Deanne Algeo, sneaked one through the infield and Iona had the lead. Once again, the Broncs were unable to offer hard luck Rachael any offensive support and lost the game, 2-1. Rachael struck out 7 and walked no one. Alyssa Maiese earned her 10th win of the season for Iona, and struck out 4 Broncs.

Iona survived a real scare with their win in game two. They next play their make up date at St. Peter's Tuesday, before heading to Siena for a match up that may decide whether or not they make the MAAC tournament. Should be exciting.
