Errors Hamper Red Foxes Again

Dani Koltz went 2 for 3

W. Carolina 5
Marist 4

Box Score

The Marist Red Foxes dropped a 5-4 game to Western Carolina Friday on the opening day of the North Carolina A&T Invitational in Greensboro, NC.

Defensive errors have been a problem for Marist early this season; today it cost them a game. The Red Foxes fell behind early in this one, trailing 2-0 after four innings, when they came up with their trademark big inning in the fifth. They scored four times to take the lead, with RBIs produced by Alyssa Zhaka, Nicole DiVirgilio, Danielle Koltz and Aly Klemmer. But after Western Carolina opened the bottom of the 6th inning with a home run to cut the Marist lead to 4-3, a pair of errors led to two unearned runs and a 5-4 loss. Emily Osterhaus started the game, and Janine Lalli took the loss in relief although she allowed no earned runs and was an out away from getting out of the 6th inning with a lead.

It's early in the season, but Marist must tighten up the defense before they enter conference play. They will continue play Saturday with games against Utah Valley State and Youngstown State.
