Fairfield Drops Opener

Rae Ball homers on opening day

Kansas 5
Fairfield 3

The Fairfield Stags lost their opening game at the Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, NC Friday 5-3 to Kansas.

A decent start to the season for the Stags, up against a Big 12 team that had played the previous two weekends and was on a seven game winning streak. Fairfield jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kristen Filicia and Mikayla Shumate led off the game with singles. After a fielder's choice which got Mikayla at second base, Kristen and Lauren Liseth executed a double steal to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. An Ali Wigand ground ball scored Lauren for the second run of the inning. Kansas got a run back with a solo home run off Fairfield starter Rae Ball in the third inning, but Rae answered that in the fourth with a solo shot of her own. A pair of two run homers in the bottom of the fourth gave Kansas the win.

The Stags will be back in action later today against host Wilmington.
