The Iona Gaels split a pair of games Saturday at the Longwood Spring Classic in Farmville, VA, outlasting Oakland 5-4, and falling to Quinnipiac 2-0.

The Gaels were cruising along in their game against Oakland this morning, holding a 4-0 lead headed to the sixth inning when things got interesting. They reached that point by scoring once in the third inning, when Chelsea Sheehan drove home Jodi Petersen who had doubled; and scoring thrice in the fourth inning off of Katie Jansson and Beth Kann RBI hits, with Carly Argyle also scoring after a wild pitch. Up to the point where Oakland doubled home a run in the sixth inning to cut the Gael lead to three, Iona starter Alyssa Maiese was in full control, striking out 13 batters. Which brings us to the seventh inning, the top of which saw Oakland strike for three runs, two of them coming on a two out double. Oakland then nearly took the lead on a steal attempt of home, but relief pitcher Carly Argyle applied the tag for the final out. Phew!
Shocked, but not beaten, the Gaels came storming back in the bottom of the inning. Chelsea Sheehan tripled to right to lead off, and the Gaels quickly loaded the bases. Chelsea then scored the winner when Deanne Algeo singled. Jodi Petersen was 3 for 4 in this game.

Game two against Quinnipiac was a tight affair. Sarah Jackson was in the circle for Iona, and was the victim of a couple of errors in the sixth inning which gave Quinnipiac two unearned runs and a 2-0 win. The Gaels continue Sunday with a pair of games at Longwood.
