The Canisius Golden Griffins split their opening games of 2012 at the Pirate Classic in Greenville, NC Friday.

Senior Caroline Main seems fully recovered from her injury plagued 2011 season after throwing a dominant 2 hitter against the Drexel Dragons. She finished the game with eight strikeouts, and only one walk, and no earned runs while cruising to victory. The Golden Griffins got on the scoreboard early, scoring a pair in the first inning. Lizzy Gatto was on third base after getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, and advancing on Val Nappo's single when she strolled home after a wild pitch. Katie Lancellotti then made it 2-0 with a single. The only run Caroline Main allowed was as a result of a called illegal pitch, after a Drexel runner made it to third base on a passed ball in the top of the third inning. A Lancellotti triple singled home Lizzy Gatto once again in the bottom of the same inning, and the Griffs never looked back.

They weren't so fortunate in game two against the host Pirates. East Carolina built a quick 8-0 lead over Canisius starter Jen Consaul, and although the Griffs mounted a four run comeback in the 5th inning to initially repel a run rule loss, ECU got those runs right back in the home half of the inning. Lauryn Chris was 2 for 2 in the losing effort.

Canisius is back at the Pirate Classic Saturday, with games against Virginia and East Carolina.
