Red Foxes Shake The Rust Off
The Marist Red Foxes opened their 2012 softball season this past Saturday in Norfolk, VA with a tripleheader that was necessitated by a gloomy Sunday forecast. They went 1-2 on the day, and definitely showed signs of winter rust.
The Red Foxes did get off to a good start in inning one of the day's first game against Fairleigh Dickinson, jumping out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of Alyssa Zhaka and Nicole DiVirgilio RBI singles. But it was all downhill from there, as Marist committed five errors in an 11-2 defeat. The Red Foxes would go on to commit a whopping 10 errors in the tripleheader, a sure sign of that winter rust, although Coach Ausanio could not have been very pleased. His team gave a much better effort in the 5-3 win over host Norfolk St. in the day's second game. This game was tied 2-2 in the 8th inning when Aly Klemmer stepped up to the plate and smashed a three run homer over the center field fence for the win. Freshman pitcher Melanie White earned her first college win with a complete game effort, striking out six Spartans along the way. The Red Foxes faced off again against Fairleigh Dickinson in the day's third game, and although they gave a much better effort, still fell 9-6. Dani Koltz had a big game in the loss, hitting 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs. Sarah Carmody was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs; Alyssa Zhaka was 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
The Red Foxes will be back at it this coming weekend at the North Carolina A&T tournament in Greensboro.
