Lady Jaspers Open Seaon In Florida

The Manhattan College Lady Jaspers will become the final MAAC school to open their 2012 softball season when they begin play Friday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL. The LJs will be at the games for about a week, and have a total of ten games scheduled.

Manhattan is the big unknown in the MAAC this season. Gone is the class of '11, comprised of eight players who led the Lady Jaspers to three consecutive tournament appearances. That's a huge turnover, and naturally the team is forecast to suffer growing pains. But the truth is that no one knows what will happen for them this season; remember that Fairfield had a big turnover last year, but saw their freshmen propel the team all the way to the MAAC Championship game. Returning for Manhattan is senior catcher Carla Velasquez, who will anchor the defense and captain the team. Also returning is Katie Bowen. Katie is coming off a great freshman season which saw her hit .336, mostly playing the infield. Katie was a great high school pitcher, however, who did not see much time in the circle last season because of the seniors ahead of her. She performed well when she did pitch though, with a 3-1 record. As for the freshmen, they will get plenty of chances to prove themselves in 2012. The LJs also have a junior class that did not see much playing time; that will change this season.
