Gaels Survive Scare; Sweep St. Peter's
The Iona Gaels moved into first place with a sweep of the St. Peter's Peahens Saturday in New Rochelle, NY.
You wouldn't think a 5-40 team who has won only two conference games in the past three seasons could walk into the defending champions' backyard and pose a threat, but the St. Peter's Peahens did just that on Saturday. St. Peter's lost game one of this doubleheader at Iona, and really, they gave the game away. Neither of Iona's runs were earned, and the Gaels won in the bottom of the seventh inning due to two Peahen errors, scoring the winning run without a hit. Shelby Beaver pitched a great game for the Peahens, throwing a four hitter with just one walk. Unfortunately for her, her team committed four errors. Chelsea Crews drove home the lone Peahens run in the third inning. Iona scored their first run on a passed ball and error. Iona survived, but Coach Rivera could not have been very happy with the performance, excepting Sarah Jackson of course who carried her team to victory again, striking out eight although she was not feeling great today.
Shelby Beaver started game two for the Peahens, but ran out of gas after two innings and trailing 2-0. Eileen McCann got it going for the Gaels, smashing her seventh homer of the year to deep center in the first inning. Eileen would go 3 for 4 in this one. Senior Allyssa James had a terrific game, hitting 3 for 3 and driving home three runs. Alyssa Maiese, who earned the win with eight strikeouts, also drove home a pair of runs.
St. Peter's fell to 1-11; Iona improved to 9-3 and prepare for a big matchup Sunday against Siena.
