The Marist Red Foxes improved to 3-1 with a doubleheader sweep of St. Peter's Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Marist opened their MAAC home schedule Saturday against an improved St. Peter's squad. Game one saw the Red Foxes take a 1-0 first inning lead when Nicole DiVirgilio drove home Ashley Corriss, who opened the game with a double. Third inning RBI singles by Dani Koltz and Ally Klemmer extended the Marist lead to 3-0. That lead turned to 5-0 in the fifth inning when Alyssa Zhaka blasted a two run homer over the center field fence. St. Peter's tried to rally in the sixth inning, scoring twice on four hits, which included RBI singles by Chelsea Crews and Carolyn Griffin, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes held on for the 5-2 win. Freshman Janine Lalli improved her record to 8-1; Emily Osterhaus picked up a save. Ashley Corriss, Megan Lamoureux and Dani Koltz each had a pair of hits for Marist. Michelle Tinajero and Chelsea Crews were both 2 for 3 for the Peahens.

It was St. Peter's who jumped out to a first inning lead in game two when freshman sensation Nicole Olmedo rocketed a home run that put the Peahens up 2-0. Marist, however, would erase that lead over the next four innings, scoring six times. In the bottom of the first, Dani Koltz hit a solo shot to halve the St. Peter's lead. In the second, the Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead when Ally Klemmer homered with Alyssa Zhaka on base after a walk. In the third, Marist went up 4-2 thanks to a Nicole DiVirgilio RBI double. And in the fourth, Marist sealed the deal when Sarah Carmody homered, and Ashley Corriss doubled home Taylor Kuzma. The Peahens would get another run in the fifth when Nicole Olmedo doubled and was sent home by Shelby Beaver, but it was not enough and Marist won 6-3 for the sweep. Ashley Corriss was 3 for 4 for Marist; Nicole Olmedo 2 for 3 for St. Pete's. Freshman Melanie White picked up the win.

Marist travels to Rider Sunday in a matchup between two 3-1 teams. St. Peter's will be in Siena with a 1-3 record. On a side note, it's interesting to see the St. Peter's team progressing as this season goes on. They're not quite over the hump yet, but the improvement from the past two seasons is noticeable.
