Rider and St. Peter's benefited from some great pitching in their doubleheader split Saturday in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Rachael Matreale was totally dominant in game one of this MAAC doubleheader. The senior pitcher struck out 13 Peahens in the five inning run rule game. She pitched a no hitter, and was a third strike wild pitch away from a perfect game. While Rachael was unhittable, her teammates got plenty of runs for her, ending the game early, and saving her arm for the second matchup. The Broncs got all over the Peahens right from the start, scoring three times in the first inning. Kehli Washington led off with a walk, followed by Alyssa Paul's single. Thereafter, Sam Pugh stepped up and smashed a pitch over the right field fence for a 3-0 lead. Alyssa Paul added a sac fly RBI in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0. And after Rachael quickly whiffed another three batters, Rider put another two on the board thanks to Ally Coryell and Kehli Washington RBIs. The Broncs ended the game early in the fifth inning with a Heather Muscara RBI double, and a bases loaded walk. Heather was 3 for 3 in this game.

It seemed perfect for Rider having their ace breeze through a shortened game, and fresh for another. And Rachael pitched well again, allowing only two runs, one of them unearned. The problem was, she was outpitched by St Peter's Shelby Beaver (pictured left). Shelby shut down the Rider attack to only four hits, while the Peahens jumped to a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Francesa D'Amato and Michelle Tinajero singled before Nicole Schnecker's bunt scored Francesca from third. Francesa D'Amato hit a big double in the third inning that scored Alexis Gallagher, who had reached on one of Rider's four errors. After building that 2-0 lead, Shelby Beaver pitched a very controlled game, walking no one, and allowing just one run in the fifth inning. Samantha Mayer drove home Lucy Higgins to cut the Peahens' lead to 2-1, but Shelby Beaver retired the final seven Broncs to secure the win.

Rider is now 3-1 in the MAAC; St, Peter's opens at 1-1.
