Saints Wrap Up A Big Weekend With Sweep Of St. Peter's
The Siena Saints concluded a high scoring MAAC weekend with a shutout sweep of St. Peter's Sunday in Loudonville, NY.
It was all Siena in this MAAC doubleheader, beginning with the run rule game one win. St. Peter's was on the defensive from the start in this one, as they elected to intentionally walk MAAC hitting leader Shannon Jones her first three at bats. The strategy did not work, as the rest of the Saints' lineup made the Peahens pay for the free passes. The Saints have hit strong around their star hitter all season, which they must do, so I'm not a big fan of the walk strategy. Siena scored a dozen runs on a dozen hits. Kayla Kaminsky and Alyssa Sceppaguercio each pitched in a pair of RBIs. Siena busted this game open with a seven run fourth inning to win easily. Jessika-Jo Sandrini pitched a three hit shutout, striking out seven Peahens in the five inning game.
Game two wasn't the blowout of the previous match, but the Saints cruised to an easy win nonetheless. The Peahens did pitch to Shannon Jones in this one; and of course she went 2 for 2, scoring a pair of runs. Kayla Kaminsky put the Saints on the board with her third RBI of the day in the second inning, singling home Meg Volz. In the third inning, the hot hitting Nastasha Powlowsky smashed a pitch over the center field fence good for two runs. And in the fifth, after Shannon Jones was intentionally walked again, Jessika-Jo Sandrini made the Peahens pay by driving home a run. Shannon scored on an error. Amanda Filippazzo went the distance in the 5-0 win, allowing five hits and striking out four.
Siena raised their MAAC record to 4-2; St. Peter's fell to 1-5.
