Marist and Fairfield each orchestrated late inning comebacks in their MAAC doubleheader split Saturday in Fairfield, CT.

A couple of great MAAC games took place in Fairfield Saturday; outcomes were in doubt until the last pitch. Becca Trott started game one for the Stags, and held Marist hitless through the first three innings. In the meantime, her team jumped in front with three third inning runs. Kristen Filicia and Lauren Liseth reached base through a walk and an error, then ran wild on a double steal setting up Ali Wigand, who got them both home by clubbing a double to center field. Great teamwork! Rae Ball then singled Ali home, and the Stags were up 3-0. Marist finally got their bats warmed up, hitting safely ten times in the final four innings. The Red Foxes got on the board in the fourth and fifth innings with single tallies. Nicole DiVirgilio drove a run home; then Taylor Kuzma scored as a result of catcher Lauren Liseth's error. But Lauren made up for the gaffe by tagging Sarah Carmody out to keep the score 3-2 in favor of the Stags. The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh inning when the Red Foxes took the lead off of Megan Lamoureux's RBI double and Nicole DiVirgilio RBI single. Lauren Liseth did triple for the Stags in the bottom of the same inning, but was left stranded on third base as freshman Janine Lalli improved her record to 7-1.

In game two, Fairfield was faced with the prospect of opening MAAC play with four losses at home. Rae Ball started in the circle for the Stags, and it did not go well for her at first. Marist put up two runs in the opening frame when Megan Lamoureux once again doubled home a run, followed by Alyssa Zhaka's RBI single. Fairfield got it going in the bottom of the second inning though, knotting the game at 2-2 when pitcher Rae Ball turned into hitter Rae Ball and knocked one out of the park for two runs. The Red Foxes jumped back in front 3-2 in the fifth inning when Dani Kolz hit a sacrifice fly that scored Taylor Kuzma, who had opened the inning with a single. Fairfield hit the bottom of the sixth, and began to play with some desperation, pounding out five hits in the inning, and scoring three times to take a 5-3 lead. Ali Wigand and Sammi Ruffolo drove home the tying and go ahead runs; then Rae Ball doubled home what would prove to be the winning run. Marist attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh, cutting the Fairfield lead to 5-4 when Dani Kolz drove home another run, but this time they ended the game with a runner standing forlornly on third base. Megan Lamoureux was 3 for 3 in this one; Alyssa Zhaka 3 for 4. Rae Ball drove home four runs on the day and picked up the win in game two.

A thoroughly enjoyabe conference doubleheader. Marist begins 1-1; Fairfield is now 1-3.
