Gaels Drop Opener At Berkeley Regional

Allyssa James was 2 for 2 vs. the top team in the nation

#1 California 8
Iona 0 (5)

Box Score

The Iona Gaels are still looking for their first NCAA Tournament win after losing to #1 California 8-0 in five innings Friday night in Berekely, CA.

The Gaels were hanging with the country's top ranked team until the fifth inning that saw the Golden Bears put up five runs to end the game early. Cal scored three times in the opening frame. Iona starter Sarah Jackson got off to a rough start, walking a pair of runners before Cal got on the board via a passed ball. The Golden Bears' Breana Kostreba then hit a two out, two run home run over the center field fence for a 3-0 lead. Sarah settled down nicely after that, allowing only one runner until the fifth inning. The Gaels had difficulty generating any offense until the fifth inning, when Allyssa James singled and was sacrificed to second base. But pinch hitter Beth Kann struck out to end the threat. Cal broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning with four hits, a couple of walks, and an Iona error. Cal only had six hits in the game, but made the most of them. Allyssa James had both of the Gaels' hits.

The Gaels will face Boston University, a 3-2 loser to Arkansas, Saturday evening. This will be an excellent opportunity for the Iona softball program to earn their first ever NCAA Tournament win. A win would move them to another elimination game later that night; a loss would end their 2012 season.
