Regular Season Winds Down With Much Undecided

As predicted here, this season's MAAC race is going down to the the wire, with this weekend's games filled with tournament implications.

The only definite result thus far is that defending Champion Iona has clinched a berth in next week's tournament (the top four teams qualify); but in what position the Gaels will finish is still unknown. They have not clinched the top seed, and will likely need a win or two to do so. After Iona, there are five teams fighting for three spots. The possible scenarios are too complicated to get into here; there are many. For instance: Canisius is in if they sweep Rider at home Sunday. Rider is in if they sweep Niagara and Canisius, or if they just sweep Canisius and Siena loses once. If Siena wins all four, and either Canisius or Rider lose twice, they're in. And on, and on.

You can see this weekend's schedule on the right----every doubleheader has implications excepting Manhattan at St. Peter's; well, that may decide who finishes last! I think Iona will want the top seed, so don't expect them to take a "day off" against Marist.

It's going to be an exciting wrap up to the regular season leading into Tournament week. Of course, you can read all about it here!

Any predictions on the final four?

Actually, no. I think it's too close to call. I think Rider will have to be careful how they use Rachael Matreale Saturday, because even if they lose both of those games, they will still be very much in it come Sunday. Canisius coach Rappl of course has a lot of experience in these situations, and it has shown recently. I'm a little worried about Marist and their pitching situation. They have four tough games coming up.
