Ellie Hanover To Be Named New Niagara Softball Head Coach

Courtesy of the Gaston Gazette

Former MAAC batting champion Ellie Hanover is returning to the conference, and will soon be named Niagara University's new softball head coach.

Ellie Hanover has spent the last three seasons as the head coach of Belmont Abbey College, a division 2 school in Charlotte, NC. Prior to that, Ellie coached division 2 Florida Tech, leading them to a school record of wins. She began her coaching career in her native Buffalo, NY, first with Erie Community College, then with D'Youville where she was twice named NEAC Coach Of The Year.

Ellie Hanover played college softball with the Canisius Golden Griffins, and led the MAAC in 1997 with a batting average of .451, which is still the ninth highest in conference history. She was named All-MAAC and All-MAAC Tournament that season.

Congratulations Coach Hanover!

Sydney Dimon Named All-American

Get used to her name, you'll be reading it a lot soon!

Incoming Iona freshman Sydney Dimon was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Tuesday when she was named to their High School All-American second team.

Sydney just completed her high school career at Notre Dame in Elmira, NY. She had a fabulous senior season for the Crusaders, hitting .617. She drove home an astounding 49 runs in just 22 games; and had a slugging percentage of 1.037. She will join the Gaels in September.

Sydney was also an NFCA East Region first teamer, as was incoming Canisius freshman Tori Nappo, who earned All-American status in 2011.

Jayne Oberdorf Commits To Marist

Courtesy of Pittsburgh Tribune

Jayne Oberdorf of Greensburg, PA has verbally committed to play softball at Marist College beginning with the 2014 season.

Jayne is a right handed pitcher for Greensburg Salem High School, where she just completed a very successful junior season with a record of 16-3. Striking out 193 batters while walking only 23, Jayne throws hard, but also has a full repertoire of pitches in her arsenal. She plays travel ball with the Steel City Cyclones, and tossed a no-hitter at the 2010 ASA Nationals. She is also a great athlete, playing basketball and golf.

Congratulations Jayne!

Roni Rivera Retires

Breaking...

Iona softball head coach Roni Rivera has retired.

After two very successful seasons, in which she led the Gaels to a pair of MAAC Championships, Roni Rivera, according to a source, is retiring from softball coaching to pursue other opportunities. Rivera was hired by Iona College after previous head coach Jaime Wohlbach abruptly left for Delaware in the summer of 2010. Stepping into a difficult situation, she did a splendid job keeping the team intact, and in championship form.

Iona College is currently conducting a national search for her replacement.

Rachel Quackenbush Signs With Siena

Courtesy of the Times Union

I forgot to post this during the excitement of the MAAC softball home stretch; it's a huge signing for Siena College, one that, in my opinion, sets the Saints up as a serious contender for the MAAC crown in the coming seasons.

Rachel Quackenbush of Hoosick Falls, NY has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball at Siena College beginning with the 2013 season. The second most prolific strikeout pitcher in New York State High School history, Rachel averages about two Ks per inning. She's thrown 16 no hitters, including one this season where she struck out 18...and lost! She won't have that problem with the powerful Saints. Rachel is not just a flame thrower; she has a full array of pitches, and is an intense competitor, leading Hoosick Falls to a couple of State championship appearances. She can hit too.

Congratulations Rachel!
