Sydney Dimon Named All-American

Get used to her name, you'll be reading it a lot soon!

Incoming Iona freshman Sydney Dimon was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Tuesday when she was named to their High School All-American second team.

Sydney just completed her high school career at Notre Dame in Elmira, NY. She had a fabulous senior season for the Crusaders, hitting .617. She drove home an astounding 49 runs in just 22 games; and had a slugging percentage of 1.037. She will join the Gaels in September.

Sydney was also an NFCA East Region first teamer, as was incoming Canisius freshman Tori Nappo, who earned All-American status in 2011.

Notre Dame's Becca Saggiomo was recently awarded the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award.
Saggiomo excelled as a student with a 94 grade point average along with being stellar on the softball field as well.

She sported a .413 average with 25-RBI, 27 runs scored and an on base percentage of .554 with a slugging percentage of .524. She also led the team with 14 walks, was hit by pitches six times and had five stolen bases. At first base she had no errors in a total of 105 chances.

After transferring to Notre Dame she was an integral part of their 2011 NY State Championship Team that had a 26-0 record. Notre Dame was a combined 46-3 in the two years that she was a part of the softball program.

This prestigious award is presented annually by the U.S. Army Reserve to high school students who have shown outstanding ability in both academics and athletics. The U.S. Army Reserve has presented the National Scholar/Athlete Award since 1981. Since then it has become a strong tradition in many high schools.

Saggiomo will be attending and continuing her softball career at Niagara University in the fall.

Becca will definitely have a chance to step right into the starting lineup. But we're still awaiting word on who the new Niagara coach will be.
