|Ali Hand makes a play at the Beach Blast|
Iona 2 (8)
The Iona Gaels completed play Sunday at the Beach Blast in Wilmington, NC with a close eight inning loss.
The Gaels had no problem getting runners on base and in scoring position in this game, but they did have a problem producing runs, leaving 14 on base. This would cost them in the end. But the game started out well when in the top of the second inning, Beth Kann blasted a pitch over the left field fence. It was her second homer of the season. The senior is seeing regular playing time, and has responded with a .333 average to begin the season. Wilmington took the lead with a pair of runs, one of them unearned, in the bottom of the fifth. A hit batter and error hurt the Gaels in that inning. Iona had a number of chances to tie up the game after that, and finally did so in the top of the seventh inning when Ali Hand scored off of a Katie Jansson single. The game then went to extra innings. The Gaels loaded the bases quickly in the top of the eighth with no outs, but with could not convert. Wilmington won the game in the bottom of the same inning with a pair of sacrifices that scored the runner placed on second base in the tiebreaker scenario.
Carly Argyle went the distance for Iona, and I thought she pitched very well aside from some wildness. She struck out six, and allowed only one earned run. She also had two hits, as did Katie Jansson. The Gaels will next take the field on the weekend of February 22 at the North Carolina Classic.
