George Washington 1
The Iona Gaels used a balance of pitching and hitting to cruise to victory over George Washington Friday at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, NC. Their second game of the day was rained out.
It's George Washington's birthday today, but the Gaels don't care! They never do care about the opposition, and today they put together all the facets of their game for their most impressive win of the young season. Carly Argyle got the start in the circle for Iona, and after allowing a run in the first inning, was shutdown the rest of the way. "Gnarly" Carly would allow only three hits over the game's last six innings, striking out six Colonials along the way. She even helped her own cause offensively, with an RBI double in the sixth inning. The Gaels pecked away at the GWU pitching until finally tying the game in the fifth inning courtesy of a bases loaded walk. The bases were still loaded, but with two outs, when Ms. Clutch Eileen McCann stepped to the plate and calmly stroked a double to center field for two runs and the lead. This invigorated the Gaels who kept hitting, building a four run lead, against which old George had no chance. Eileen and Bri Schauer were both 2 for 3 in the game.
Iona will play North Dakota State Saturday. Because of the rainout, there could be an added game. Check back for updates.
