The Canisius Golden Griffins swept their first day at the Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, VA, taking back first place in the MAAC with a 10-4 record.
Canisius was the only MAAC team to experience victory Friday, first with their dominant performance vs. Pittsburgh (described in the post below), and then by beating the host Patriots later in the day. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning in their game against George Mason, the Griffs took the lead in the second inning thanks to Michelle DelPrince's 2 RBI single. George Mason jumped back in front 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning, but Canisius tied the game back up at 3-3 when Meghan Cuda singled Beth DeMarco home. The game stay tied until the top of the seventh inning when Val Nappo drove home Alexis Roman, who had singled to lead off the inning, and Meghan Cuda who had reached due to a Patriot error. Val's sister Tori added her 15th RBI of the season for the final score of 6-3. Jen Consaul went the distance for the Golden Griffins, allowing just one earned run.
On the day for Canisius, Michelle Delprince was 4 for 7, which included two triples and three RBIs. The Griffs lead the nation in triples per game. Meghan "Barra" Cuda was 4 for 9 with two RBIs; The Nappo sisters had three RBIs each; Alexis Roman was 3 for 7 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Canisius will continue play at the Cherry Blossom Classic Saturday with games against Ohio State and Pittsburgh.
