Marist And Canisius Split

Nicole Cheek had 5 RBIs in the Red Foxes' win
Marist 10
Canisius 2

Canisius 6
Marist 4

The Marist Red Foxes and Canisius Golden Griffins split a MAAC doubleheader on a brisk and breezy Saturday in Buffalo, NY.

Game one started out very well for Canisius starting pitcher Amanda Baun, as she struck out the first seven Marist batters she faced. That great start did not last however. The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Nicole Cheek hit a bases loaded single good for two runs. Canisius responded in the bottom of the same inning when Meghan Cuda, who hit her MAAC leading seventh triple, scored on Val Nappo's ground out. Marist put up four runs in the top of the fifth inning when Nicole Cheek again stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. This time she hit a triple that cleared the bases, giving her five RBIs for the game. She then scored after Alyssa Zahka's suicide squeeze bunt. Val Nappo did homer in the bottom of the same inning to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 6-2, but Marist blew the game open in the top of the seventh inning with a three run home run by Alyssa Zahka, and a solo shot by Kyrsten Van Natta, giving Marist a 10-2 win. Emily Osterhaus got the win, raising her MAAC record to 3-0. Amanda Baun took the loss, despite striking out a dozen batters.

Marist jumped to a 1-0 first inning lead in game two thanks to Alyssa Zahka's RBI, her fifth of the day. Canisius finally got their bats warm in the third inning, taking a 6-1 lead. A two RBI double by Robin Kennery, and an RBI double by Tori Nappo knocked Marist starter Melanie White out of the game. The first batter reliever Paige Lewis faced, Marissa Miller, drilled a pitch over the left field fence good for three runs. The Red Foxes' tried to get back in the game, with an RBI double by Janine Lalli, and a two run homer by Colleen McWillimas (the first of her career) in the fifth inning, but their rally fell short and Canisius won 6-4. Jen Consaul got the win, striking out six; Melanie White took the loss. Marist is now 3-1 in the MAAC; Canisius is 2-2.
