Siena And Fairfield Split Intense Doubleheader

Rae Ball hit 2 homers Sunday, including a grand slam
Fairfield 5
Siena 4

Siena 2
Fairfield 1

The Siena Saints and Fairfield Stags split a tournament like MAAC doubleheader Sunday in Loudonville, NY.

Game one of this series started out looking like it might be a Fairfield blowout. After one out, the Stags quickly loaded the bases, and went ahead 1-0 when Siena starter Jessika-Jo Sandrini walked Lauren Filicia. Rae Ball then stepped to the plate and drilled a pitch over the fence, giving Fairfield a stunning 5-0 lead. However, Jessika-Jo would limit the Stags to just one hit the rest of the game, allowing her team a chance to rally. A sacrifice fly by Meg Volz got the Saints on the board in the bottom of the second inning, then they put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 5-4, with Shannon Jones and Jessika-Jo Sandrini providing RBIs. Fairfield starter Rae Ball hung tough though, and retired Siena in order in the seventh to preserve the win. Each team had four hits in the game.

Becca Trott started for Fairfield in game two, and it was Rae Ball who again homered, in the second inning, to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. Becca would allow only one Siena hit in the game, but it was a big one. In the bottom of the fourth inning, after walks to Shannon Jones and Jessika-Jo Sandrini, Alyssa Lancaster (pictured left) stroked a single to left field which scored Shannon and sent J-J to third. A sacrifice fly by Meg Volz scored the winning run. Jessika-Jo pitched a great game for the win, and after that big first inning of game one, allowed Fairfield only one run in 13 innings. Lauren Liseth was 2 for 3 for Fairfield in this game. The Stags are now 8-4 and in second place in the MAAC. Siena is now 5-3, and in third place.
